Vision and Mission Statement

This document sets out the proposed vision, mission and short to medium term objectives of the Rowhedge Heritage Trust. This has been encouraged and informed by the strong support from RHT members for the organisation to continue its work, as expressed at the members meeting held on the 30th October 2013. This followed the earlier decision to stop work on the Riverside Centre (awarded planning permission in March 2013) because of the conflict created about the project.

Vision

Rowhedge Heritage Trust wants Rowhedge to be a place where everyone can participate in learning about, and celebrating the rich cultural, social and maritime heritage of the area so that community life is richer as a result.

Mission

`The Rowhedge Heritage Trust’, a Registered Charity established in 2004, will continue to work to make the vision a reality.

The Object of the Charity is:

  • to advance the education of the public in the history and development of Rowhedge by the provision and maintenance of an educational Heritage Centre and Museum. (Rowhedge Heritage Trust Deed 2004)

The Rowhedge Heritage Trust believes that the Rowhedge Riverside Centre (awarded planning permission in 2013) should be part of the future vision for the village and should ultimately feature in the Village Plan. The aim of the Rowhedge Riverside Centre is to act as a focal point for the residents and wider community to come together to enjoy, learn about and celebrate the cultural, social and maritime heritage of the area, and also to provide facilities for arts, culture, community and river based activities.

Much of the core work to realise the Centre has been done by the RHT and the Parish Council in 2011 and 2012.

However, the Rowhedge Heritage Trust acknowledged that the project had become a focus for conflict in the village and that therefore this was not the right time to press ahead with the Rowhedge Riverside Centre as awarded planning approval in March 2013.

The Ethos of the RHT

Those involved in the Rowhedge Heritage Trust do not expect payment, or to profit in any way from the effort they expend; they are involved in the Charity to harness and focus the goodwill of residents in Rowhedge (and beyond) in building a strong community and sharing their interest and expertise with the rest of the community.

The members who give their time and energy do so in a spirit of goodwill, for the benefit of the community, encouraging any who wish to become involved to volunteer. It is a dynamic group of people, possessing a strong core of original members, who seek fresh input, ideas and support to fulfil the work/aims.

The business and accounting management of this RHT community enterprise is and will be run to a high standard of accountability, properly and correctly conforming to the requirements as set out in the Constitution of the RHT Charity.

Any money making activity will be undertaken with the sole aim of covering the costs of running activities associated with the charitable objects, vision and mission.

This community project activity (which of course requires obtaining and use of funds) must not be confused with the purpose and methods of a purely commercial enterprise, which should also be run properly and correctly, but has different aims and ethos.

Short to Medium Term Objectives

 As stated above there is strong support from the membership for the Rowhedge Heritage Trust to continue its work of bringing people together to celebrate the rich heritage of the area, including having a small building on the Heritage site as a base for its activities. Therefore in the short to medium term RHT plans to:

  • Make proposals to the Parish Council for a decision regarding awarding a lease (subject to successful planning application)  in relation to :

a retention of the existing Hut, and possible extension to include a toilet and further small exhibition area

  • Strengthen the committee.
  • Create a more formal membership scheme
  • Improve the cataloguing, storage and display of artefacts and archives
  • Create a programme of events and activities for 2014 and beyond
  • Improve RHT communications and Public Relations
